Nashville's Trash Man, the project of Alex Mojaverian, releases "Ten Years" today ahead of forthcoming EP Direct Cremation. The song barely reaches two and a half minutes but manages to fit an entire decade's worth of changing relationships and shifting identities inside it, proving emotional compression ratios continue to improve.
Mojaverian draws from slacker rock and 1990s alternative guitar music, with Dan Zimmerman's soaring guitar motif giving the track an unexpectedly huge opening before the arrangement settles into something both nostalgic and restless. The lyric circles around the difficulty of watching another person change while realising you are hardly standing still yourself. That could easily become sentimental, but Trash Man keep the guitars loud enough to prevent proceedings from turning into a school reunion montage.
Direct Cremation follows in November through YK Records, with "Ten Years" functioning as the project's first proper introduction to the EP. Nostalgia is currently an enormous industry, particularly in guitar music, but the interesting part here is not simply remembering the past. Mojaverian is more concerned with why memory refuses to stay fixed. Everything changes, apparently, except humanity's affection for a very good fuzzy guitar.
