Emerging indie-rock group Spanish Horses have released "City I Believe", the final advance single from their forthcoming debut EP Small Notions, scheduled for November 27 through So Young Records. The recording follows earlier singles "Some People" and "Hey Man (Hey Man!)", introducing another example of the band's combination of Americana influences, slacker-rock arrangements and guitar-driven alternative songwriting.
Singer Tom Onezime has explained that "City I Believe" was the first composition the group developed after a lengthy creative break. Determined to reintroduce some energy into their rehearsals, the musicians deliberately approached the recording with greater volume and intensity. The song apparently remained identified simply as "track two" for several months before receiving its eventual title. That informal development process reflects the spontaneity associated with many independent guitar bands, where ideas frequently emerge through rehearsals rather than elaborate songwriting strategies.
Spanish Horses are currently touring ahead of the EP's release, with performances scheduled in Berlin, Hamburg, Utrecht, Birmingham, London and Oxford. Their London appearance forms part of The Great Escape's First Fifty showcase, an event designed to introduce emerging artists to music-industry professionals and adventurous audiences.
The upcoming EP represents an important milestone for a group attempting to establish a recognisable identity within Britain's competitive alternative-rock landscape. "City I Believe" offers another opportunity for listeners to become familiar with their music before the complete collection arrives. The title also sounds considerably more romantic than track two, demonstrating that even the most relaxed indie bands eventually recognise the commercial advantages of giving their songs proper names.
