Wet Leg's career takes an unexpectedly slimy detour today with a limited seven-inch collaboration involving Yukee, the ukulele-playing six-year-old star of the CBeebies preschool series of the same name. Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers appear in the programme as The Slime Sisters, pop-star snails attempting to reach a festival, and that adventure has now escaped television altogether.
The resulting single features "Doing What You Love," taken from the series, with Yukee covering Wet Leg's "11:21" on the B-side. Naturally, the record is being pressed on sparkly 'snail trail' pink vinyl, because ordinary black vinyl would represent an unforgivable failure to commit to the concept. Only 500 copies are being produced with no repress planned, released through Pandapop!, the children's imprint of independent label Alcopop! Records.
Yukee's wider musical world is surprisingly formidable, having already featured contributors including Rivers Cuomo, PP Arnold, Chali 2na and Tom Odell. A free Rough Trade East performance is scheduled for September 27, alongside a Fender ukulele giveaway for aspiring musicians under six. Independent music occasionally becomes painfully serious about itself. Thankfully Wet Leg have arrived dressed as snails to restore balance.
