American singer-songwriter Anna McClellan has released "Anywhere", a collaboration with Philadelphia producer and percussionist Garrett Burke, better known as Gloorp. The recording introduces another preview of McClellan's forthcoming EP South Of Dodge, scheduled for November 20 through Exploding In Sound. Named after a street in her hometown of Omaha, the project follows an active year that included her EP Space, you big cloud and backing-vocal contributions to Greg Freeman's album All Set The Bone.
"Anywhere" explores the complicated emotional experience of preparing to leave a familiar place just as life begins offering new reasons to remain. McClellan wrote the composition shortly before moving away from Omaha, during a period when new friendships and romantic experiences were making the decision increasingly difficult. Rather than concentrating exclusively on conventional folk arrangements, she invited Gloorp to contribute electronic percussion.
The resulting recording combines intimate songwriting with rhythmic elements that introduce an unexpected sense of movement. The collaboration demonstrates how musicians from different creative backgrounds can develop arrangements that retain the personality of both participants. McClellan's understated vocal approach remains central, while Gloorp's production adds an unconventional electronic dimension.
South Of Dodge will also include previously released single "Drank Earlier". The EP promises a collection shaped by personal transition and the emotional contradictions associated with leaving familiar surroundings. Apparently the universe has an extraordinary talent for making a city suddenly interesting precisely when somebody has already packed their belongings and arranged the moving van.
