Anthonie Tonnon announces an ambitious new audio-visual show titled ‘Cinematographer’ and prepares to release ‘Executive Assistant’, his first new song in three years. The project combines electronic music, visual DJing, documentary ideas, French avant-garde cinema, urban politics and turn-of-the-millennium dance-pop.
In other words, it contains considerably more thought than the average performance involving a laptop and a smoke machine. Tonnon and producer Jonathan Pearce built the new sound by cutting up live-band recordings and reconstructing them around acid basslines and four-on-the-floor rhythms.
The stage show will premiere in Auckland before travelling through New Zealand, Melbourne and London, followed by European and UK dates with The Veils. ‘Cinematographer’ sounds less like a standard album campaign than a complete temporary world, with Whanganui, cinema history and disco all somehow sharing the same control room.
