Black Bananas are back with Bad Bunch, and the whole thing has the energy of a machine that kept running in another room even when nobody could hear it. Announced on 25 June, the album will be the band’s first since 2014’s Electric Brick Wall and their first for Fire Records, with Jennifer Herrema, Brian McKinley and Kurt Midness returning as a trio. Lead single Turkey Burgers dates back to earlier sessions but was reshaped after the pandemic forced the band into new recording methods. Herrema frames the result not as a new direction, but as the current state of a system already in motion. That sounds right. Black Bananas have always made rock music feel like glam residue, street static, studio smoke and half-finished trouble. Bad Bunch promises the magic is real again, and probably not house-trained.
