Emily A. Sprague lets Cyano bloom on a destroyed planet made only of synths

Emily A. Sprague’s Cyano announcement is one of today’s gentlest and strangest pieces of news. Known through Florist and a series of solo releases including Water Memory, Mount Vision, Hill, Flower, Fog and Cloud Time, Sprague now folds singing into a practice that had often been instrumental. The new single Sing To becomes the first window into an album inspired by cyanotype photography and the work of Anna Atkins, whose botanical images pushed Sprague toward the idea of a character living on a ruined planet called Cyano. The whole record is reportedly made from synthesized sounds, with no samples or acoustic instruments, which gives the concept a lovely contradiction: botanical inspiration rendered through artificial tone. Cyano sounds like a blue world after misunderstanding, where the voice returns not as decoration but as a fragile lifeform trying to grow through electronic light.
