Indie project Lucky Star have surfaced with "Romeo," a jangling indie-rock track highlighted in today's new-music radar and described as only the project's second release. That makes the confidence of the song particularly notable. "Romeo" arrives wrapped in hazy guitars and dreamy vocals, borrowing the warmth of classic jangle pop while keeping enough lo-fi softness around the edges to feel unmistakably contemporary.

It is nostalgic music without an obvious historical costume: the guitars could comfortably have wandered out of several previous decades, but the production belongs to the bedroom-pop era in which intimacy is often more valuable than expensive studio shine. The track's strongest quality is atmosphere. "Romeo" does not attempt to flatten the listener with an enormous chorus or demonstrate how many guitar pedals were purchased during lockdown. Instead, the parts accumulate into something light, melodic and slightly blurred, the musical equivalent of remembering a summer more favourably than it probably deserves.

The independent scene is not exactly suffering from a shortage of jangly guitars, which means personality matters more than possession of the correct equipment. Lucky Star already sound as though they understand that distinction. "Romeo" makes nostalgia feel less like looking backward and more like finding somewhere pleasant to float for three minutes.
