23 September 2026 – Matthew Heller Lets Romance Drive the Steamroller

Portland songwriter Matthew Heller has released "Steamroller", an indie-rock single that treats romance less like a polite stroll through the park and more like heavy machinery arriving without checking whether the pavement was insured. Built around Heller's piano and distinctive vocal delivery, the song expands into guitars, bass, drums, percussion, Mellotron and a horn section, pulling together indie rock, alternative pop, Americana and the songwriter's self-described neo-Western approach.

"Steamroller" previews forthcoming album "Dead Westerners: An American Elegy", a project exploring the collision between mythology surrounding the American West and the considerably messier pressures of modern life. That is fertile territory for Heller, because American mythology has always sounded best when somebody remembers to check the invoice afterwards. The Portland musician and multi-instrumentalist releases work through Heller High Water Records and Publishing, retaining control over his catalogue and masters rather than treating ownership as an optional extra to be discussed after everybody has signed the contract.

His previous regional support has included PDX Pop Now!, Portland Radio Project and XRAY FM. "Steamroller" sounds designed as a relatively immediate doorway into the larger record: accessible enough to work as an individual single but arranged with enough detail to suggest the album has broader ambitions. If "Dead Westerners" is about dismantling romantic myths, beginning with a love song named after construction equipment feels strangely appropriate.
