London group Mouth Ulcers introduce themselves through ‘Silent Pictures’, a seven-track debut EP that draws from goth, post-punk and darker alternative rock without simply dressing up as a tribute act from 1983. The collection includes previously released tracks such as ‘Western Horror Story’, ‘Closer to You’, ‘Space’, ‘Prevail’ and ‘A Perfect End’, alongside the new songs ‘Satisfy’ and ‘Silent Pictures’.

Across the EP, the band move between atmospheric restraint, relentless riffs and sudden surges of adrenaline. Familiar influences including The Cure, Joy Division and Siouxsie and the Banshees are present, but Mouth Ulcers build their own melodic character within that tradition. The title track closes the release with considerable force, while ‘Satisfy’ offers a more reflective contrast. Goth has spent years repeatedly returning from the dead, which feels entirely appropriate. This time it has brought seven songs and excellent tailoring.
