New Zealand-raised, Melbourne-based hip-hop artist Name UL has returned with "Dice Roll," a new single introducing his forthcoming album CHOSE(N). Born Emanuel Psathas, the musician grew up in Wellington before relocating to Australia in 2023, a move that influenced his songwriting and encouraged a period of personal reflection.
CHOSE(N) has reportedly been developing for approximately a decade and is intended as a companion to his 2016 debut CHOICE(S). "Dice Roll" offers a relatively playful introduction to that ambitious project, combining a relaxed romantic narrative with confident rhythmic production. The original instrumental idea came from New Zealand producer Baccyard, while Name UL handled production and Lee Prebble completed the mix at Wellington's Surgery Studios. Mastering was undertaken by Kelly Hibbert, whose previous credits include work associated with Flying Lotus and Madlib.
The forthcoming album will also receive an unconventional introduction. Name UL plans special listening sessions inside cinemas, including Classic Cinema in Melbourne and The Roxy in Wellington. The concept encourages audiences to experience the complete recording as a connected artistic work rather than another collection of tracks competing for attention inside a playlist.
Independent hip-hop has always provided room for unusual presentation ideas. Turning an album launch into a cinema experience seems considerably more memorable than asking everybody to click another streaming link.
