Spirit Duo let piano and drums come out swinging from Copenhagen’s experimental edge

Spirit Duo’s Come out lands on 30 June through Copenhagen label Nische, and the credits alone give the release heavyweight experimental context. Christian Rønn handles piano, while Pheeroan akLaff brings drums and percussion; the full album is framed around free jazz, improvised music, contemporary experimental sound and industrial-adjacent textures. Rønn’s background moves from classical organ training through Danish experimental scenes, free-jazz groups, post-punk and solo work, while akLaff’s long career touches giants including Henry Threadgill, Cecil Taylor and Mal Waldron. That makes Spirit Duo less a casual meeting than a conversation between histories of texture, rhythm and risk. Come out sounds like a title with both invitation and command built in. The music likely does the same: open the door, make the room unstable, then let two experienced players redraw the floor in real time.
