29 October 2026 – This Is the Kit Recruit Richard Dawson for Safety Valve and Celebrate the Friends Who Keep Us Going

British alternative-folk project This Is the Kit have released "Safety Valve", the latest preview of their forthcoming album Ghost Coat, scheduled for January 15, 2027, through Memphis Industries. The recording features guest vocals from acclaimed singer-songwriter Richard Dawson and explores the importance of friendship during emotionally difficult periods.

Kate Stables, the musician behind This Is the Kit, describes the song as a tribute to people who provide support without judgement. Its themes include the relief of talking to somebody who understands, accepting assistance and discovering that ordinary activities can help restore emotional balance. Cycling also plays a role in the song's inspiration, suggesting that a bicycle ride may occasionally prove more effective than another afternoon spent worrying indoors.

Stables had long admired Dawson's distinctive vocal style and eventually invited him to contribute to the recording. His participation introduces another layer of character to the arrangement, connecting two adventurous figures within contemporary British folk music. "Safety Valve" is accompanied by a live performance video filmed at Bedford Esquires and directed by Lemon Thief. The track follows earlier single "Skim a Stone" and serves as the opening composition on Ghost Coat.

This Is the Kit have developed an international following through intimate songwriting, inventive arrangements and collaborations with musicians from several different genres. Their latest recording demonstrates how folk music can address familiar emotional experiences without becoming predictable. Apparently the ingredients for an effective song about friendship include honesty, an excellent guest vocalist and the occasional reminder to get outside.
